City SC Posse is back with a brutally honest Matchday 4 recap after STL CITY SC falls 2-0 on the road to LAFC… and somehow still looks like the better team.

In Episode 8, we break down a frustrating performance where CITY controlled possession, created chances, and even put the ball in the net… only to walk away with zero points. Sound familiar?

We dive into:

  • The ongoing scoring drought and why it’s becoming a real concern
  • A controversial disallowed goal that may have changed everything
  • Questionable substitution timing and growing pressure on the coaching staff
  • Key player performances, including Pompeo’s impact and continued struggles in the attack
  • Betting fallout, including a full sweep of losses and one ruthless hedge play

Despite sitting bottom of the Western Conference, there are signs this team is closer than the standings suggest… but results need to come fast.

If you’re a CITY fan trying to figure out whether to panic or stay patient, this episode is for you.

Bright: Alright, I lost track of what episode number this is, but I know it's our match day for recap. No, it's more than six. I think this is like eight or something like that.

Kev: That's six. Seven? Eight? Something like that, yeah.

Bright: Yeah, but match day for recap. That's that's the most important thing and we managed to find time I'm on spring break break vacation coming to you from Florida And something that I learned is that they do have sports betting in Florida, but only through a particular app So I'm not able to use DraftGangs. It's like none of the regular apps. It's a very specific casino app so I might

Kev: Yep.

Bright: figure something else out when it comes to the sports betting.

Kev: Yeah, think Kentucky does that too, where they used to, right? Like to where you could do horse, you know, track, I guess, betting anywhere in the state. But that was the only thing that they let you do and you had to use specific app. So interesting to hear that's the way it is in Florida.

Bright: Yep. Well, either way, maybe it's a good thing because I lost all my bets last week. ⁓ This was this was not.

Kev: ⁓ yeah.

Bright: a great result for us. It was very unfortunate because really I felt like we were the better team. And we can go over some of the stats, but certainly from the eye test, we were the better team for the majority of that game, which is pretty crazy. mean, LAFC, you know, they're historically a great team. They're expected to be a great team this year. They're undefeated. They continue to be undefeated. They haven't conceded a goal.

Kev: Yeah.

Bright: Still even after the city game ⁓ in MLS play so for us to go in there on the road ⁓ Not having won a game only scoring one goal and play a game like that It's very unfortunate that we didn't get the result

Kev: Yeah, I felt the same way we were. I felt great about the game as it was going on. I did not have high hopes going into it, but you know, after. I don't know, 15 minutes, I was thinking to myself, holy crap, we're in this. We've got a chance if we keep this up. had some strong offensive, you chances. ⁓ Obviously, we didn't step up in time on their goals, so we needed to push a little bit more and attack that ball from a defensive standpoint. The thing that gets me and I don't know what you saw, what you think, what the hell were we doing from a substitution standpoint? Why didn't we have anybody coming out? We were far too late in those subs. We were clearly tired or something. We needed to sub people out within that 70th minute and it cost us.

Bright: Yeah, I mean definitely so and and you know coach Demay is getting reamed online for that. Not only for the timing of his substitutions, but you know who he's bringing on and off and maybe we have some more information coming down the pipeline here. ⁓ You know, we'll we'll talk about this in the next episode, but like toy shirt he's out with a injured ankle for the next game. So him coming out at know at halftime, even though again looking like the stronger striker. appears to be injury related as opposed to you know, something else. So if that's the case, OK, fair enough. It's frustrating because, know, we've talked about this toy shirt has never really been 100 percent fit since joining the club. So we've never really been able to see him at his best and play a full 90 minutes and that kind of a thing. So, again, for the first half, he looked solid. The offense looks solid. And maybe that played into some of that that idea from the coaching staff that like let these guys keep it going because they're doing it well. Now after you go down one nothing, know, now you're like, well, we need to press. Again, you're playing for a tie. You need to get a goal just to tie it back up. And then right as they scored their second goal, you know, is when we were looking at making those substitutions. And at that point, it became too late. You know, and think that was the thing.

Kev: Yeah, because it was the 80th minute, I think.

Bright: Yeah, it was close to that and I was gonna say if I can pull up the timeline I can see when that second goal Came in I have it right here. It was the 82nd minute. Yeah, so that's when you bring in Pompeo and that's when you bring in saying bin and I believe we also brought in Joyner. Well, Joyner didn't even come in till a little bit later He didn't come into the 91st minute, right? So, you know at that point the damage has been done too little too late. They don't have a chance to impact the game. So I think that was certainly frustrating. know, Becher ⁓ in as long as he was in, he was completely gassed. He came in, came out of the 78th minute right after that goal and it was Becher that was chasing their guy and couldn't catch up to him and you know, not necessarily faulting him for that goal. But he was gassed. He was tired.

Kev: I just couldn't understand the substitutions bringing some, know, I think, like you said, we had three, three substitutions in the 82nd minute, something like that. It was far too late. The result was going to be the result. were bringing home a loss. So I don't know if it was just bad timing on that second goal. I thought we should have made those substitutions 10 minutes ⁓ prior to whatever.

Bright: Yeah, and we can go...

Kev: The big thing maybe that we did see was who do we bring in in those substitutions? Who saw the field?

Bright: Well, yeah, mean, Nick Sorley, Joyner, two young guys, and then Pompeo, who we've been saying, I don't know how he didn't start that game. You know, he's yet to start a game.

Kev: We haven't seen yet. Yeah, so it was nice. It was nice to see him. It was nice to see him on the field, ⁓ which was my big proper that I'm not gonna say he.

Bright: Yeah, and again, he made an impact. He took a shot at the end of the game, a good shot that required a legitimate save from their goalkeeper. But again, if he gets more minutes, you might see some more development. So it's confusing. And I think, again, more people are starting to recognize how bad Wallum is. He was bad again. He had another bad game. He doesn't move the ball forward. ⁓ He kills the attack every time and it fathoms me that he's a starter in the MLS.

Kev: You heard a lot of, you know, if you were listening to broadcast the announcers, we're all over it for his crosses. I think I texted you, what is like, it's a hope and a dream when he crosses it over. I don't think he has any game plan, any intentions in terms of what he wants to do with the ball. He's just kicking it. He's out there kicking it, which is an ideal. So.

Bright: Yeah. Yeah. Yep, No, I know it. I know it. again, we'll see and we'll talk about this next game. let's, next episode, let's see what happens with our lineup and we'll have some other changes. And again, if you want to get some thoughts on that, check out our match day five preview and we'll talk about the game coming up against the New England Revolution. So let's talk about some...

Kev: We're bringing home a win.

Bright: So let's talk about some of this. Yes, yes. And it looks like it's going to be a good day for it. That's for sure. So we need to win. And again, when you look at some of these stats, you should.

Kev: We're doing it. I'm going to be at the game, so...

Bright: We should see more goals. this is clearly a problem. Maybe it's one of those fluke droughts. just so happens to be that it's the first four games of the season, and we'll start seeing this come together. They're talking about it's a process. It's a process. And I know it's, DeMay is only four games in, but it's not looking good. And. Something that surprised me was how good our possession was. And I think that goes back to our conversation earlier when we talking about the eye test. We had 56 % of the possession. So you're controlling the game from that standpoint. However, we only had three shots on target. So 13 total shots, but only three on target. That's not great. We also had nine quarters.

Kev: Yeah. Yeah.

Bright: And obviously, we couldn't convert on those.

Kev: Yeah, no, it's frustrating. I'm thinking back to hurdles, just open, open shot that he couldn't put away. For whatever reason, we have these offensive chances. We are we're getting opportunities. We just cannot put the ball in the back of the net. It's frustrating. It gives me a little belief that eventually we're going to figure it out. We're going to start putting this, you know.

Bright: That one hurt.

Kev: putting some points up on the board, but you know, I don't, I don't know if I can, if I can believe it too much because eventually, you know, if you're just not scoring, you're not scoring, right? Like the same thing last year, we weren't scoring.

Bright: Yes. Yes. Now two things. I got two things to that. We'll see. Yeah, until you actually see the results in the field, you never know. But I got two points. One, we do of course, we have a tough strength of schedule at this, know, the start of the season for us is brutal. You know, we're playing good teams. We have a new coach. We have players that are out. know, so it could just be bad timing. The second point to that is we actually did put the ball on the back of the net. So we have to talk about that.

Kev: Yeah, no, yeah, good point. Oh God, that was brutal. I don't understand. How weak, how weak.

Bright: And it looked, yeah, it was a terrible call. And they definitely did review it because the referee was holding the restart on the play so VAR could take a look at it. And then eventually he would just play on. And I think people were just flabbergasted. Even the announcers were flabbergasted because they're like, wait a minute. They have to take a look at this because that's clearly.

Kev: Remember?

Bright: not a foul. I mean the guy just fell. There was no contact and it was a great ball in and everybody was throwing off by it and it just went straight in the back of the net. That should have been a goal. I mean.

Kev: No contact. Yeah. So I agree. was a big turning point in the game, right? Like if we're up one nothing with the offense that we're putting up, ideally we don't, you know, take back and do nothing but defend. But I want to see what we're like in that position because I don't think we've seen us with the lead very often. Once I think maybe game one, we have the lead and

Bright: It would, yeah, it changes the game completely. Well, mean, yeah, game one, we had the lead for a little bit before they came back. But again, you're right. You're on the road. You're not expecting to win. You get a goal early like that, a good goal. You're controlling the game. It completely changes everything. yeah, ⁓ so it's very frustrating. And then again, it was frustrating on a...

Kev: I wanna know what that rumor is. Yeah, this point.

Bright: Personal level not only because our losses, but I also lost all my bets. I had the one that I did with you live You know in our last episode I think I said Pompeo was gonna get the goal and we were gonna win one nothing That was our parlay right and out. So that was five bucks about down and then I was using my bonus bets So I think I had

Kev: Yeah. Yeah, the...

Bright: I had Toy Shirt as an anytime goal scorer, which I was feeling pretty good about, but again, then they took him out at halftime and that's out. Then I had Sun, because he dominated us in St. Louis. I was like, ⁓ he's going to score. So I had him as an anytime goal scorer. ⁓ He got taken out actually relatively early, surprising, I think, a lot of fans. He lost that. I had Money on the Draw. Which even when we went down one nothing, I was like, okay, we're playing good. You know, we could come back and win. No, uh-uh, that was out. And then I'm trying to remember what my fourth bet was. ⁓ I can't remember. What did you do? I'll see if I can think of it.

Kev: I I Yeah. I dipped into the Asian handicap. I took the minus 1.25 goals. So with that bet, it's basically a double bet in the way it's a split at the 1.25. So I'm making a bet that we lose by two goals in that way.

Bright: Did you?

Kev: which we did and I had, and that if we lose by one goal, I lose half of my money and then the other half is considered a push it out of one goal. I hit, I was expecting to lose by two or more. No, it's not. know, it was a little bit of the take the heart out.

Bright: Hmm. It's not fun betting against your team, but...

Kev: and bet with the brain and I didn't think I was going to win that bet. I kind of chopped it up as a big loss. was like, well, kind of feels good to lose this one. And then. It's yeah, yeah. So yeah.

Bright: Yeah. ⁓ Well, yeah, I don't know. So obviously we'll talk about the next game here on the next episode coming back home. ⁓ You know, we're dead last. in the standings now. We're the only Western Conference team without a win. Kansas City got the win last week, so they jumped ahead of us. And it's pretty, ⁓ pretty disheartening to see us right now at the bottom of the table. I don't know if I want to say it's unexpected per se, but we're minus five gold differentials. ⁓ We have one draw, three losses. So, you know, that means one point. So one goal for six goals against.

Kev: We're playing better than what the record shows. We just haven't put it in the back of the net enough. So it you some hope.

Bright: Yeah, and... Yeah, and again when you look... When you look at some of the teams we've played so LAFC currently in second place San Diego currently in third place Seattle currently in fifth place and then we also played Charlotte and they're in the Eastern Conference and they're currently in sixth place. So both those all of those clubs doing fairly well. You know we haven't played any of these bottom of the barrel teams right there along with us. Portland Minnesota Sporting KC Austin

Kev: Thank you.

Bright: You know, but again all of them have wins or a draw So Kansas City's got a win and a draw Minnesota win and a draw Portland at least one win So it's tough. Philadelphia and Columbus on the Eastern Conference also do not yet have a win. Philadelphia, of course, who won the Eastern Conference last year, Bradley Carnell, currently sitting at a minus five goal differential and zero points. So I think a big surprise there.

Kev: That's a big one. You know what? We've got a game coming up though, not to get to the look ahead, but this is a game we can win because I think we've got what New England coming in who's also defeated. I think so excited to talk about that one.

Bright: Yep. Alright. Well, ⁓ let's save that talk for the next episode. Yep, and if you want to preview the match day five, ⁓ check out that episode and you'll get our thoughts on what hopefully will be ⁓ our first win of the season.

Kev: Love it. Adios.
