St. Louis CITY SC is two wins from a trophy, and somehow this all started with a school-night family outing that turned into penalty shootout madness.

In this episode of City SC Posse, Bright and Kev recap CITY’s wild U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal win over Houston Dynamo at Energizer Park. Bright was there with the whole family, and the night delivered everything: cheap tickets, general admission energy, long concession lines, kids running on popcorn and ice cream, Franky joining the unofficial Tarps Off movement, extra time, and a penalty shootout that made staying out way too late completely worth it.

On the field, Marcel Hartel scored early, Houston answered almost immediately, Roman Bürki appeared to aggravate a lingering issue, and Ben Lundt came in cold for his first minutes of the season. Lundt gave up a tough goal before halftime, but settled in, made key saves, and then became the hero in penalties.

The guys break down the full match, including Hartel’s opener, the chaotic Houston equalizer, the wet field, Bürki’s injury, Córdova drawing the penalty, Hartel burying the PK, Wallem somehow playing the entire match, and Polvara making a massive overtime recovery tackle that saved CITY’s Cup dream.

Then came penalties. CITY finished its chances, Lundt saved Houston’s first and fourth attempts, and St. Louis advanced to the U.S. Open Cup semifinal. Colorado awaits in September, and CITY is now just two wins from lifting a trophy.

Then the focus shifts to Austin. It is the final MLS match before the long break, Austin sits just one point above CITY, they just fired their coach, and they are still searching for their first road win of the season. With Wallem suspended and Hartel in form, this is simple: if CITY wants this improved run to mean something, go win at home before the pause.

Cup dream alive. Austin next. No emotional letdown allowed.

Bright: All right. Coming at you Friday, uh, before the game tomorrow, a couple of days after the Tuesday game at this point. And you just said like, Oh, I got to remember the game. You know why I rewatched it, uh, the other day, kind of, you know, I wasn't like fully involved, but I was like, I need to pay attention, try and try and remember some of the stuff. And I was at the game. you know,

Kev: Yeah. Cause you were at the game, yeah.

Bright: Yeah. And you don't always, you know, they call the penalty, for example, you know, and I was like, okay, well, was it really a penalty? Cause they don't like reshow it a whole lot at the game. So some of those key moments I wanted to get back and watch, but, ⁓ we'll start, we'll say. You missed out. This was a fun game. Yes.

Kev: on one. You know, I missed out. It was a fun game, but I felt bad for you at the same time because you brought the kids to the game and you were there probably a little later than you were planning on.

Bright: Yeah. No, not really. We got there like pretty much right at six o'clock when the gates opened.

Kev: No, I mean like game time. Game time ran longer. Yeah. I felt bad for you. And I was like kind of wondering ⁓ if you had to leave because the kids were too much before the game ended and maybe you had missed it, but I'm glad you were able to stay for the whole game.

Bright: ⁓ yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. It was probably the latest that the kids had ever stayed up ever. Yes. Yeah, we stayed for the whole thing. Now, now Caroline, maybe like halfway through the first overtime, she was like, I'm ready whenever you are. And I was like, well, we might as well stay now, you know? ⁓ and I didn't really want to tell her that it was like no golden goal that it was guaranteed 30 minutes. I just sat on that, know? and I, you know, I had a feeling like we're probably, we're probably going to penalty kicks and you know, I want to be a part of that. and.

Kev: Yeah, we're not gonna be. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah Yeah.

Bright: You know, the kids, the kids did really well, you know, it's hard for them to pay attention the whole time, but you know, they got popcorn that pretzels ice cream. ⁓ Frankie is now part of the tarps off, ⁓ boys or the tarps off club. You know, they, don't know. It wasn't an unofficial appearance, maybe at the soccer game. There were a couple of guys doing it, you know? And so Frankie got wind of that. And so he was like, if we score a goal, can I take my shirt off and.

Kev: Nice. Yep. He got into it. Yeah.

Bright: wave it around, you know, so I was like, yeah, you know, so Hartwin Hartl scored his PK. ⁓ yeah. You know, they were, they were into it and you know, even leading up to the game, like the practice, like I think Frankie thought like that was it. And I was like, no, no, no, man. Like it hasn't even started. And I have to say the atmosphere, the vibe was pretty cool too. So even though this was not a sold out crowd, you know, but there were a lot of people down there way more than the first, ⁓ home game in the U S open cup.

Kev: Anything to get them into the game, right? Yeah. Yeah.

Bright: from what I could tell, ⁓ you know, pretty much it felt sold out from the sections that were open. ⁓ and it, felt crowded, you know, ⁓ they probably could have had a couple more places open for food and beverage. know, there were, there were some long lines. And so like I ran, I got, ⁓ I took one of the kids, got Caroline some food, brought that back. Then I had to run back and then I kind of had to wait just for pretzels and hot dogs. Fine.

Kev: Yeah.

Bright: You know, and then I was trying to get a sneak another beer before the start of the game and everything was packed. Right. And like, there's five minutes to go before the start. And so I go back to behind the goal with, one of those touchless markets or whatever they're called. And there's this huge line. And I'm like, well, I'm not waiting in this line. So I just walk, I just, I just walk right up and I'm like, are you guys waiting for food? Because I could tell it felt like everybody was waiting for food.

Kev: Yeah. was pretty quick.

Bright: But if you just wanted to go get a beer, you just tap your credit card in out. I'm like, there's no reason to be waiting in this long line. So I think I started something and then the guy, you know, couples, he's like, I'm not waiting for food. I'm like, follow me, you know, cause in out, just cut everybody. And I even told the lady, I was like, you should have a food line and a nod food line. was like, yeah, I don't know what's going on, man.

Kev: I was gonna say it so quick. Yeah. You Which goal were you behind? Okay, yep, yep.

Bright: Behind the supporter supporters section. Yeah. That's not where we sat. Now we sat section like one ⁓ four. So pretty close. You know, we're in one ⁓ two as our normal seats. So a little bit more central and you know, we had some other kids by a slightly older, but everybody was having fun drinking party atmosphere, you know, so it was, it was all, it was all good. And you know, of course, when we won the game, the kids were really into the PK. ⁓ and then.

Kev: Okay. Mm-hmm.

Bright: We pretty much bolted. We tried to beat the crowd. had a good parking spot, but I'm like, you know, what was it at that point? 10, 15, maybe. And we still had to get home, get the kids to bed. They did have school the next day, but I let them sleep in and I took them to school. So they got an extra hour. Yeah. No. And that's part of the reason why we decided, you know, to go, you know, was like, it's the last couple of days of school. So I was like, let's do it. You know, and the same was true for Caroline. She didn't have to really worry about.

Kev: ⁓ yeah! end of the school year, they're not doing anything anyway. took a

Bright: getting planned or doing any that crazy stuff. She had already finished report cards.

Kev: Yeah, then what kind of fun they were going to have the next day anyway. And yeah, he's easy going.

Bright: Yeah. Yeah. So no, I mean, it w it was fun. And you know, the game in and of itself, you know, kind of like this back and forth opportunities for both teams. You know, we get the, we get the first goal again. I don't know how many games in a row is this now? Uh, four or five. Yeah. Yeah. So we're on a little bit of a tear, uh, score and first, and certainly that helps. Now this one was a little bit different. So, you know, hard old gets a really nice goal, you know,

Kev: Five, think. Five, yeah. I feel like...

Bright: keeps his run going. I don't, you know, I don't think we need to talk about that one too much, but buries it. So, yeah, I mean, maybe, maybe a little lucky kind of takes a bounce, but he, you know, he gets to it goalies out of position. It was an empty net. ⁓ he just had to make sure to put some power behind it, you know, and

Kev: felt a little lucky. Well, the goalie misplayed it, didn't he? And I know that his defender was kind of coming back and maybe was in the way a little bit, I feel like very much so that the goalie misplayed that ball and, know, Hurtle, to his credit, took the opportunity and put it in the back of the net.

Bright: Yeah. Yeah, for sure. You know, and that's what you need. And again, we're excited. We're 10 minutes in now. The dynamo almost come, they come right down and almost score. So then, you know, yeah, almost score. We make the save all good. It feels all good. I barely even saw the actual goal because now you're like, all right, we have a goal kick and I'm tending to the kids. And I turned back because I like kind of hear this collective gasp. Berkey's on the ground.

Kev: Mm-hmm. Yeah, go ahead.

Bright: And the guy passed it into the net and half the stadium, think was like, what the heck just happened.

Kev: Well, all of America said the same thing, Because the freaking broadcast was showing a replay again. They did it again. And like they come back and the dynamo are celebrating. It's like, what the hell just happened? You didn't see it live.

Bright: Yeah, yeah. They didn't even, I didn't, yeah. Yeah. I noticed that when I watched the replay, was like, ⁓ they totally met and I'm sure they were thinking the same thing. They're like, all right, goal kick. Like we got, we got a second, but yeah.

Kev: They got to stop showing them, man. They've got to stop doing it. It's second or third time this year that the broadcast has come back to a goal. I think one of them was like a lost connection or something, but man, it was frustrating. then they then they actually showed the replay of the goal. It was even more frustrating. Because Frickin Berkey, I don't know, did he slip?

Bright: Yeah. Yeah.

Kev: Did he panic when he slipped there? I think it was a panic slip because he realized that he mistouched it and he, you know, he was going to lose that ball to offense.

Bright: ⁓ Well, okay. He did. Now this, these are the things that happen though, when you're trying to play it out of the back, you know, and the ball originally went to Durkin, Durkin wasn't prepared for it or didn't know that this guy was going to come on as fast as he was coming on. He plays it back to Berkey. I don't think Berkey was ready for it. You're right. He has a heavy touch and now he still probably could have gotten there. Maybe, but yeah, the slip doesn't help. Now I do have to say, I'm not sure why we're watering the field before the game like that.

Kev: Mm-hmm.

Bright: When it rained five inches the day before. So, I mean, I know that we have a drainage system. I, and it's not like a regular lawn. I understand all that. It just seems kind of crazy. And I remember in the last couple of years, and you and I have certainly noticed this where they'd have water puddles around where the sprinkler heads were. Now they fixed that whatever they've done. They have fixed that. don't see that this year. Yeah.

Kev: We noted that, like, first game of the season, we're like, hey, you can't tell where those sprinkler heads are this time.

Bright: Yes. Yeah. They definitely made improvements in that sense. I just, I just wasn't sure now, cause you could tell that the field was still wet. You know, the ball was skipping water was kind of spraying up, you know, so you could tell them like, doesn't need to be this wet. And I'm sure he wasn't, Berkey wasn't the only one to trip either. You know, there were other guys to slip and fall because, know, because the grass was damp, you know, so

Kev: Yeah.

Bright: I do question that and then they come back and they water it at halftime and I'm like, I don't know that it's actually necessary So

Kev: All right, cost us constantly. Yeah, you know, like you don't want to change the field on them, you know, at halftime and dry it out. You got to keep it wet and make sure that it's consistent, consistent.

Bright: No. Yeah. Oh yeah. God forbid you have to adapt to the field. Well, um, we score in the 10th minute in the dynamore score in the 12th minute. you know, pretty much right away. And I could tell after that slip, you know, when you're watching the play at the other end of the field, you don't see it on the TV, but I'm watching Berkey, you know, and he's standing at the top of the box and kind of moving and stress. Yeah. And I'm like, Oh no. I'm like, uh-uh, he's hurt.

Kev: 12. Yeah. Kind of filling it out a little bit. ⁓ really? ⁓ huh. Yup.

Bright: I'm like, he's hurt. then, so eventually, you know, he goes down somewhere around the 25th, 26th minute. Uh, and I'm like, that's it. He's done. He's out of this game. He's, know, so that it's frustrating for the fact that, okay, you consider him to be one of the better goalies in the league. And, uh, you know, Lunt hasn't, he has had zero minutes so far this season. So you don't really know what kind of condition he's in or what kind of form he's in. haven't seen him. Now in the past couple of years, he usually got the U S open games, you know, but, you know, Demay's going all in. And we saw that with, saw that with the starting lineup for the most part, ⁓ as well, which, know, the fans, I felt like we're pretty much demanding. So, you know, good on him. ⁓ but yeah, now you have Berkey coming out. I don't know what his status is. I haven't heard anything as of yet about tomorrow. And with tomorrow being the last game before the break, maybe.

Kev: going for the win. Yep. I was hoping you didn't, I hadn't. Yeah. I hadn't either.

Bright: precautionary, they sit Berkey, you know, let him, yeah, let him have, even if, even if he's not that bad.

Kev: Give it up. You know what helps? You know what helps to do that?

Bright: ⁓ what?

Kev: Let's performance.

Bright: What? Well, yeah, sure. Absolutely. Now I do have to say though, that the goal.

Kev: Like with the way he played, like he felt good about it. And I thought he was pretty strong.

Bright: Yeah. The goal that he gave up in the 42nd minute though, I thought was pretty weak. Yeah. I thought that you had to.

Kev: I'm trying to remember that as we sit here. What happened? You just grabbed that one.

Bright: So, so their guy, um, their guy, uh, Arthur, uh, Arthur, uh, how have you pronounced his name? Uh, you know, he takes, takes a hard shot from outside the box. You know, our guys don't do anything to get in the way. Maybe Lunt is screened a little bit, but the ball bounces pretty much right in front of them. He goes to ground and the ball skips right, right past them. Yeah. So it's, you know, it's like either he didn't see it or, but I was like, it was right in front of you. Right. So it almost felt like he didn't, he didn't realize that the ball was going to bounce, ⁓ right before him. So, and I, and I know that could be tough. And again, the, grass is wet. So the ball is skipping. ⁓ but I was like, that has to be a save, especially at that point in the game. Cause now you're going into halftime and we're down to one. ⁓ so that was frustrating. And overall, I was like, the dynamo had been the better team.

Kev: Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Bright: I actually here.

Kev: You're, hey, you, something happened.

Bright: What? I think we're good.

Kev: ⁓ you're back. Okay. You were silent. I certainly didn't hear you. Maybe it was my connection and then you disappeared for a second.

Bright: ⁓ did I disappear? No, we'll see what happens. All right. So here's the halftime stats. took a, took a photo. had 64 % possession to their 36. They had eight shots to our seven. We only had one on target. had six on target. They had six falls to our one fall. They had three corners to our one corner. had 0.71 expected goals and they had 1.32 expected goals. So.

Kev: That's what happens when you put the ball in the net.

Bright: Yeah. I mean, when you have six shots on target, you know, uh, that that's pretty legit and Lunt had to make a couple of saves. Berkey had to make a couple of saves, you know, and, and by the end of the match, let me see here. So the possession, you know, the dynamo had much better possession in the second half and OT it looks like. So they even the playing field a little bit. was 53 47. Uh, they had nine shots on target to our four.

Kev: Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Bright: 20 total shots. ⁓ you know, they, yeah. Well, this is overall. So this is first and second half, you know, they had five corners to our three. Okay. But then they, they of course pick up the red card. So, you know, that that's a big turning point in the game, certainly. and, and then coming right out of the half, you know, so what was it? It was like the 50, 51st minute they get the.

Kev: This is the second half? Yeah. ⁓ God, no. Mm-hmm.

Bright: The penalty and I, and you couldn't tell it certainly looks like Cordova goes down. he going down? You never know. So when I watched the replay though, I'm like, no, that to me, that looks like a penalty in an unnecessary one. don't think Cordova was going to be in a position to, to score a goal. Like he might be able to get a flick on or do a behind the back and you know, but you know how those go. Like those aren't guaranteed goals or anything. So he was kind of running away from the goal, you know? So it's not like he was in a position to.

Kev: That was a penalty. Mm-hmm.

Bright: to get the ball and take an immediate shot. So I don't know why they felt like they had to take them down there, but he was all over them, pulls them down. And, and I said to the guys, I was like, hard will just needs to put some power on it. I think that's his biggest thing with, with his PKs. You know, he goes up, he does that stutter step and sometimes he doesn't get enough power behind it. Yeah. Yeah, I do too. I'm not, I'm not a fan of the stutter.

Kev: Yeah, he pulled them down. Little stutter, I hate the stutter so much, man. I hate it. No, he... He buried this one, felt good.

Bright: Yeah. Yeah. Felt good. And then, you know, for the rest of the game, you know, we finally make some subs, you know, ⁓ Louvin comes on in the 63rd minute. That sure comes on for Cordova, you know, and again, both of them had some plays, but they're still same old story. They're not scoring.

Kev: Who's this betcher and you said McSwirly? Quirnova, okay.

Bright: Betcher and, and Cordova, you know, well, and you could say that for McStorley too. I mean, he doesn't get nearly as much playing time. comes in in the 91st minute and he had a good opportunity to end the game with overtime in the 122nd minute. Yeah.

Kev: But I knew, yeah. No, the very, yeah, the last play, think, because he kicked it out and then all of sudden the whistle blew.

Bright: Yep. Yep.

Kev: Yeah, it was a little disappointing with the way that he took his run, think, outside, right? And it kind of forced his hand and took a bad shot on that one. What I was going to say is, I don't know, like, I didn't feel good about Lueven's play in this game.

Bright: Yeah. ⁓ ⁓ you know, I didn't notice anything per se.

Kev: I thought, I thought he had some bad touches and I know it can be tough coming off the bench and that's what I'm going to blame it on. But I thought he had some bad touches to the point that I didn't want him to take it into the fruitcakes. Really dead. Cause I didn't think he had it today or not today, but

Bright: Yeah, okay. You know Yeah. He had one that went a little wide, ⁓ you know, on a free kick and I, you know, I don't know. I was surprised that he wasn't starting honestly. ⁓ and I have to think like he has to be starting tomorrow at this point, you know, I, course you called it. Wallum not only started, but played the entire game. You know, we know that he's out, ⁓ against Austin.

Kev: Me too, yeah, you should have been. tonight. Yeah, or tomorrow. Yeah, whatever day we are.

Bright: So to may used up every ounce of energy he could. And you know what? There was no question about it. He was by far the worst player on the team again. And the whole section, my whole section knew it that, know, like we were all making fun of wall. And the guy right in front of me, he's like,

Kev: That's right. We said it. Awesome. No, really? Yeah. Man, he had some, he had some misses too, if I remember correctly, like some obvious like, what are you doing, man?

Bright: Yeah. He had a couple of misses. Yeah. A couple of high, bad touches, giveaways, a terrible crosses. ⁓ you name it. He did it in this game. Yeah. So that was frustrating, but I am excited that he's, he's out for, for tomorrow's matchup. So yeah, at least, ⁓ at least I don't have to worry about that. So, ⁓ you know, and then, so then we go into the, the PKs and

Kev: Yeah. He did it. Yeah. Yep. Saturdays.

Bright: Got it. Got to give credit where credit is due. We buried every single one. ⁓ I thought that the setup here was pretty good. ⁓ you know, Louvin. Hardell now, bum guard. All I thought was a little, a little bit of a surprise. You know, I'm like, okay, your center back coming up here, but he, crushed it upper 90 with power. There was no saving that. ⁓ and then Durkin too, you know, so all good. then I guess joiner.

Kev: Yeah. Gotta get your center backs going. Yep.

Bright: ⁓ was going to be the fifth, which surprised me a little bit. ⁓ but supposedly he's like really good at, at PKs. Yeah. So, we didn't need them, you know.

Kev: Yeah. ⁓ No, they did great. I can't believe you skipped over probably the most exciting play in N.O.T. Like you just skipped right on over it.

Bright: Oh, I think, I think that I did. did. Paul Vera. Absolutely. Yeah. You're spot on. Cause watching it live, you were like, Oh, this is a for sure goal. Yeah. Yeah. And the place, the place went nuts when he, he, he timed that perfectly, perfectly. And I don't think the attacker did anything wrong. You know, he beats lunch and yeah, maybe I, I

Kev: ⁓ huh. Yeah. ⁓ yeah, the game was over. Everybody knew it. Yep. Yep. That took one too many touches. think there's something like that. Yeah. Took an extra step. I can't remember what it was. Just to position himself a little bit.

Bright: I think Paul Vera just, he took the right route and, ⁓ you know, made, made the exact right timing on his slide. And, you know, never gave up. You know, I think there's something to say about that. He didn't give up on the play.

Kev: Mm-hmm. Yep. was awesome. But I was a little nervous after that save because we tried to clear the ball after picking it up. And it came right back in and I was like, oh God, we're going to have that play, that save. then two seconds later, let them come in and score it. So I was a bit nervous, but that was an awesome, awesome play.

Bright: Yeah. And then let, yeah. And that would be pretty standard for city. Well, you know, and, Lunt, made, he made some good saves. So I know I was critical on the goal that he gave up. ⁓ but he made some good saves otherwise. ⁓ you know, which was great. And then of course comes up huge. mean, right off the bat, stopping the first penalty kick. Yeah. I mean, place went nuts and now you're now we're in control. Right. So, you know, that was good. And, and then.

Kev: Yeah. Mm-hmm. P.K.

Bright: I even sent it to the kids, you know, I'm kind of going over. I'm like, and my, even my wife, I'm like, if we save this one, we win. don't even need the last shot, you know, and he saves it. Place goes nuts. mean, I could not tell that it wasn't the sold out crowd, you know? So.

Kev: That's there. I think think Berkey was jumping around. which, is good news, I guess. That's all I wanted to say was it's good news to see Berkey jumping around.

Bright: I'm sure. Lunt was excited. Yeah. Yeah. And supposedly to may set it in the post game press conference. He said that this was a lingering issue. So this wasn't like a new injury that he picked up in this game. It was a lingering issue that he was playing through. And maybe that fall, that slip exacerbated it a little bit. ⁓ and he decided, yeah. Yeah. So

Kev: Okay. Just enough to where it's let come out. It's just a cup game. It was awesome. was really cool. I lost 10 bucks. I put it on City Win.

Bright: Yup, yup, yup. Duh, see, I didn't put any bets down or anything like that. Not for this game, but I will for tomorrow. I will for it. I think it was too preoccupied with the kids.

Kev: Totally get it, totally get it. Yeah, I thought we were gonna win it. I knew we were going for it. I saw the lineup, felt good about it. Put in the 10 bucks, city win. Of course we kind of won, ⁓ but that's, no, that's not the way the win tie lose bet works, right? So when it goes into PKs like that, it's a tie game. Final score technically was 2-2.

Bright: Do you not get the money for that? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Which is interesting actually, cause I got it pulled up, ⁓ online here and actually says zero zero. So I'm like, that's not right. Yeah. Yeah. I was there. It was two, two. I don't know why it says zero zero. Then it says penalties for two. ⁓

Kev: Hmm. Nope, you were there. You saw it. So. So when's the next Cup game?

Bright: Not until September. Yes. So we got, we got a long ways to go and we're playing Colorado in Colorado. So yeah, we, ⁓ we drew the away game. So we got to go back to Colorado. Good news is, is we already beat them. ⁓ I think so. I think that's right. I'd have to go back and double check, but yeah, but we, you know, we already beat Colorado. So we've proven that we can go into Colorado, that we can win that game on the road.

Kev: ⁓ my god, okay, wow. Who'd beat? San Jose?

Bright: You know, September gives us a little bit more time. Of course it gives them more time to, ⁓ to get into better form. Who knows if we make any signings, ⁓ you know, so that could be interesting. You know, toy shirt could be gone. Cordova could be gone. ⁓ so, so yeah, we might have a slightly different team by then. ⁓ but I think it's pretty exciting. You know, you win that game and then you're in the cup final. So I think we'll, take it and gives us like, like we said previously, something, something to root for considering. Right now in MLS, we're, we're sitting at, uh, 14th. So yeah, it's great. Yeah. Great. Um, so let, yeah, let's, let's move on to, tomorrow's action. It's a day game. Right. So yeah, one 45 start, um, day game Memorial day weekend though, which is great, you know, so, uh, Caroline and I are going to go down. have the tickets and, uh,

Kev: That's pretty good. good. Yeah, 145, something like that, so. Mm-hmm.

Bright: We got a babysitter daytime babysitter. we'll do some day drinking. I was like, we might go to the pitch. I'm like, maybe we go to the pitch. I don't know how busy does it still get on these day games? And, ⁓ I don't know. I mean, I know it was packed when, ⁓ when everything opened up the first time, but I was like, let's get down there and.

Kev: I'm gonna guess it still gets busy. Memorial Day weekend, I'm gonna think that it gets pretty busy. So we'll see.

Bright: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So we'll see, we'll see what we do, but yeah, we want to get down there a little early, uh, you know, do the game have, you know, have a good weather supposed to be perfect. think, uh, city has a 58 % chance to win 58 % yep. Against Austin. So Austin has a. Yep. They have a 20 % chance and the draw comes in at 22%.

Kev: This is Austin, right? Going against Austin. That's a win.

Bright: Now Austin sits just one point ahead of us in the standings. They've got 14 points in the 13th spot. So with a win against Austin, we would definitely jump them and we'd have the opportunity to jump Portland if they lose and be in a tie in theory, guess Colorado would have the tie breaker. ⁓ but be, unless it's head to head matchup, if I can't remember if that's first or if it's gold differential first, but, ⁓

Kev: Okay. and good job.

Bright: It would put us right there with, with Colorado. So you have a chance to be somewhere around, you know, 11th place after this weekend. And then all of a sudden you're like, okay, you know, you're within striking distance, you know, but. You know, we said that the last game, if we could have won that game against DC, you know, but now, now I think you have to win this game against Austin. They just fired their coach after a loss to Kansas city. You know, and,

Kev: Do a little break. Yeah, move a piece. Yeah, yeah, which always sucks for that next game because you always get like a little motivational bump, I think, in, you know, following a coach firing. So.

Bright: Well, I feel like this happens to St. Louis teams all the time, whether it's baseball or, or hockey, we always have the first game after the coach gets fired. And you're right. The teams, they play a little bit harder. They, they know that like, okay, this coach can make different decisions. And you know, I have an opportunity to reinvent myself and, you know, earn my way back into the starting 11, or I got to keep my spot in the starting 11. What, you know, whatever it may be. So, ⁓ I do think that that's a.

Kev: We're always playing.

Bright: You know, that's a little bit of a trap, right? For Citi,

Kev: Yeah, yeah, but let's go out and win one. It is a must-win game because this is a game we can win. And it's at home. Yeah, it's at home, right? Like this is a game we must win. If we're going to do anything in the league, we got to win this game.

Bright: Yeah, well, you know, at Yes. And we should have beat them in Austin. Really? Yes. At home. Yes. Now we have a four, two and one record against Austin overall. ⁓ we've scored a lot of goals. Both teams have scored a lot of goals. So I don't know what the over under on this is, ⁓ but it might be worth taking the over. You know, it's always two and a half in soccer, isn't it? Yeah. Right. ⁓ yeah. Now Austin is still looking for their first road wind of the season.

Kev: what I have. Two and a half would be my guess. Yeah, yeah. I don't even need to look. I know what it is.

Bright: And their road windless streak is at 10 games right now. And since joining MLS in 2021, Austin is one of only three clubs with three or more road windless streaks of at least 10 games. So they haven't been in the league that often. And this is already the third time that they've had 10 week, 10 road windless games in a row. So you should, we should be winning this game.

Kev: Hmm. Yes. What's the longest road, windless street?

Bright: Can't put me on the spot. I didn't research that. I don't know.

Kev: I know, but I want to know like, are we going to break it? Are we going to be there 11th loss?

Bright: Well, I hope so. Only three teams, you know, I don't know. I don't have to look that up. I don't know. But again, they just got handed, got it handed to them against Kansas city, you know, who is by far the worst team in the league and coming out of the break, we'd play Kansas city, you know, followed by the galaxy. Right. And then Colorado. Yeah.

Kev: I hope so too, but how many teams have gone past 11? Yeah, that would be nice. Put together two wins and maybe get a tie out. We got Galaxy there, right?

Bright: Yes. Galaxy on the road. Yeah. And then Colorado at home. three of our next, excuse me, four of our next five games, I know we have the big break, but are on our at home. So this is the stretch.

Kev: Yeah. I just want to put it in your mind though, if we could get three wins and one tie out of that stretch, we're going to be in much better, obviously much better shape. I mean, obviously, but that would feel really good.

Bright: Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think that's my point. And yeah, it feels great. And I get, know we got the big break. We talked about that. We could have new players, all of that stuff, but let's go out in front of the home crowd. Let's prove something, have some fun, uh, make a little bit of a party. Hardell has been in great form, obviously lately. So.

Kev: Three and a half over under three and a half goals. Yeah. So they're, they're, they're counting on some goals. They're counting on a two, one game probably.

Bright: That's, that is a lot. That is a lot. Yeah. Yeah, they're right. Right. They're aware of that. So, yep. Yep. Well, I guess we'll see. ⁓ you know, I don't know that this will be our last, ⁓ city SC posse and theory. guess we can come back, ⁓ you know, Sunday, Monday and do our recap episode, but then we'll, we'll have a pretty decent hiatus here too, unless we do any impromptu episodes. I don't know. I don't know that we want to get into team USA stuff.

Kev: Yep. We'll have to recap the game or something.

Bright: ⁓ but also, you know, if there could be any signings or anything like that, maybe there's some storylines. We do some impromptu episodes, but, ⁓ yeah. Cause I mean, what did this, it's almost, it's like seven weeks basically, which that's going to be a long, long time. know we have the world cup obviously, and that'll be exciting, ⁓ to watch, but that's a long time without any city soccer.

Kev: Yep. If anybody starts missing Bright's voice over here though, during that stretch, you can catch him on the NFMP podcast. Drops on Fridays, weekly I think. So won't be city talk, right? Well, it might be, you never know. You never know.

Bright: That's right. That is right. The new episode. ⁓ we, we talked a little bit of city, in, in this episode, it's ticks ticks treasures and tarps off. That's the title. Go check it out. And I do have to tease this. ⁓ if all goes well next week, we have a, a major national guest coming on the NFN P pod. A national guest, like somebody that's known nationally.

Kev: There you go. ⁓ Mm-hmm.

Bright: ⁓ that's been on Fox news, CNN, ⁓ all of that, all of that stuff. So.

Kev: Was it the guy, the actor underneath that mask from yesterday's Fox broadcast? No, that was a mask, wasn't it?

Bright: No. No, no, ⁓ this guy's a, he's, ⁓ he's a CEO, ⁓ runs a very successful company. ⁓ may or might, may not be a controversial company. I guess we're going to find out when we interview this guy. ⁓ but a little bit of a teaser here. This could be, this could be the episode that puts NFNP pod and city SC posse, ⁓ to the next level.

Kev: If it's not already, if it's not already, you assume it is.

Bright: Well, I mean, I know what our listener numbers are. It's not. So a chance. ⁓ Yeah. Hi, uncle Dave. Maybe, maybe cousin Scott. I don't know, but, ⁓ you never know. But yeah. So, ⁓ definitely, definitely check it out. They reached out to us. ⁓ we're just finalizing the schedule now, the recording schedule. So as long as we can.

Kev: Hi mom! ⁓ There you go. You just never know. Alright.

Bright: ⁓ get a date on the books. We're gonna, yeah, I have a national guest. So I got to tease that. Yup. Otherwise, I'm excited about the game tomorrow. and, ⁓ we'll, we'll come at you back, back again next week to do the recap episode. So before our hiatus, so peace for now.

Kev: It's really cool. The recap. Love it. Adios.
